Wine is an alcoholic beverage that is usually between 10%-14% alcohol content that can either be red or white in colour. There are other variants that are available such as rose, champagne, sparkling and fortified wines. The base for all wines is fruit, most commonly grapes. There are though wines that are made from flowers or berries that can also be classed as wine.

The drinking of wine dates back over 8000 years to the times of the early civilisations. Wine was not only used in religious ceremonies, as it is today, but also as drink that was seen to protect from disease. Trading links were set up in the Mediterranean which helped spread the popularity of wine across the world, and also spread the use of the grapevines.

The main European grapevine is called vitis vinifera and today there are more than 5000 varieties of this grapevine across the world, with the main wine producers being France, Italy, Spain, USA and Australia. The wine growing regions are limited to the areas of the world with a temperate climate that provides the grape with the right growing conditions.
