The 2001 vintage looked to be a disaster, with heavy rains in September. But the wine gods dictated otherwise. By the end of September the sun broke through the clouds and blessed the grapes with unabated warmth for the next 6 to 8 weeks! Snatched from the brink of disaster, the vintage is the best since 1971!! Also a new wine Category was introduced ... "Selection". These are 'dry' wines made from the very best of the vintage ... grapes must be at least Auslese ripeness to qualify. Our friends at the Unkrich estate have turned out a marvelous SELECTION from the prestigious Saumagen vineyards in Kallstadt.
